HOW DOES ONE ACQUIRE SPANISH NATIONALITY BY RESIDENCE?

What is the required length of residency?

In general, the foreigner is required to have legal and continuous residence in Spain for a period of ten years. ten years.

 

Is it possible to reduce the legal time required?

YES, there are cases in which the required period of residence is reduced; these are:

  1. Five years: For those who have obtained refugee status.
  2. Two yearsFor nationals of Latin American countries, Andorra, Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal or persons of Sephardic origin.
  3. One year:
    • Whoever was born in Spanish territory.
    • He who did not exercise his right to acquire Spanish nationality by option.
    • A person who has been legally subject to guardianship guardianship, guardianship o foster care of a Spanish citizen or institution for two consecutive yearseven if he/she will still be in this situation at the time of application.
    • To the spouse, widow/widower of a Spanish citizen 
    • Born outside Spain of father or mother, grandfather/grandmother, originally Spanish.

In person or telematically directly by the interested party or through his proxy or representative.

What are the requirements?

Among others, not having a judicial record in the country of origin and residence, being registered, having a valid passport, passing the Cervantes Institute tests, having a valid Foreigner's Identity Card - TIE. 

 

What evidence do I need to submit? 

Constitutional and sociocultural knowledge test (CCSE) and the Spanish language proficiency test (DELE) if you are a national of a non-Spanish speaking country.
