Do you want to extend your authorization of stay for studies? Here we tell you what you should take into account.

Thanks to the relaxation of most of the measures that had been adopted in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been able to see how in Spain, especially in cities like Madrid and Barcelona, student arrivals from all over the world have increased again.

Therefore, if you have an authorization of stay for studies, you must take into account that it allows you to stay in the country while you carry out those studies, and therefore its duration depends on the course you take. Do not forget that its limit is one year, therefore, if you wish to continue with the same training or you want to carry out other studies, you must request the extension of your stay.

How do I know if I am eligible to extend my stay? You must:

1. Have sufficient financial resources to cover the costs of your stay as well as the costs of returning to your country, which must be at least 564.90 euros per month.

2. To have public or private insurance with no co-payments or deductibles.

  • In case of continuing with the studies for which you obtained the first authorization, the documentation that accredits the equivalent of the studies you have passed, and that accredits the studies you still have to take.
  • In the case of a new study, you must provide the certificate of completion of the previous course or the accrediting diploma. In this case you must provide the registration of the new course you are going to take, and you must take into account that the studies must be of the same or higher level than the one you took.

3. No criminal record in Spain and in your country of origin.

But when can I submit it?

It is important for you to know that the application deadline can be 60 calendar days prior to the expiration date of your previous authorization, or up to 90 calendar days after it.

If so, how long will it take to receive my extension?

Keep in mind that it is 3 months, which are counted from the day the application was submitted, and that until you receive an answer your stay is extended.

Remember that within one month after the notification of your extension, you must apply for your foreigner's identity card, and go in person to to the Immigration Office or Police Station in the province where you applied for your authorization.
